The evolution of braces

  • Zammitti & Gidaly Orthodontics
  • July 10, 2013
Did you know that even in ancient times, people wanted to improve the look and function of their smiles? Zammitti Orthodontics thinks of modern orthodontic appliances as sleek, efficient technology, but this was not always so! Take a look at the highlights in the evolution of braces.Ancient Times: From Greece to Rome

  • According to The Angle Orthodontist, Aristotle and Hippocrates first thought about methods for straightening teeth between 400 and 300 BC.
  • The Etruscans, in what we now know as Italy, buried their dead with appliances that maintained spaces and prevented collapse of their teeth and jaws during life. Archaeologists have discovered mummified remains in various locations that have metal bands wrapped around the teeth.
  • A Roman tomb has also been discovered in which the teeth were bound with gold wire, including documentation on the wire’s use as a dental device.

18th Century: A French Development

  • The French dentist Pierre Fauchard is acknowledged as the father of modern dentistry. In 1728 he published a book that described various methods for straightening teeth. Fauchard also used a device known as a “blandeau” to widen the upper palate.
  • Louis Bourdet was another French dentist who published a book in 1754 that discussed tooth alignment. Bourdet further refined the blandeau and was the first dentist to extract bicuspids, or the premolar teeth between canines and molars, for the purpose of reducing tooth crowding.

19th Century: Orthodontics Defined

  • Orthodontics started to become a separate dental specialty during the early 19th century. The first wire crib was used in 1819, marking the beginning of modern orthodontics.
  • During this period, gold, platinum, silver, steel, gum rubber, vulcanite, and occasionally wood, ivory, zinc, and copper were used — as was brass in the form of loops, hooks, spurs, and ligatures.
  • Edward Maynard first used gum elastics in 1843 and E. J. Tucker began making rubber bands for braces in 1850.
  • Norman W. Kingsley published the first paper on modern orthodontics in 1858 and J. N. Farrar was the first dentist to recommend the use of force over timed intervals to straighten teeth.

20th Century: New Materials Abound

  • Edward Angle developed the first classification systems for malocclusions (misaligned teeth) during the early 20th century in the United States, and it is still in use today. Angle founded the American Society of Orthodontia in 1901, which was renamed the American Association of Orthodontists in the 1930s.
  • By the 1960s, gold was universally abandoned in favor of stainless steel.
  • Lingual braces were the “invisible” braces of choice until the early 1980s, when tooth-colored aesthetic brackets made from single-crystal sapphire and ceramics became popular

Today

As we arrive in the present, you need only look at your own braces to see how far we’ve come. Your treatment plan was probably created with a 3D digital model, and we’ve likely used a computerized process to customize your archwires. Perhaps you have clear aligners, self-ligating brackets, or highly resilient ceramic brackets with heat-activated wires.

Orthodontics has come a long way from the days of Aristotle, and even the bulky wrap-around braces of just 60 years ago. Regardless of your specific treatment plan, the development of high-tech materials and methods has made it possible for your orthodontic experience to be as effective, efficient, and comfortable as possible. Call our office in Concorde, NC to schedule your first orthodontic consultation!

I had such a positive experience during my visit yesterday with Dr. Zammitti, thanks in large part to Coco’s incredible customer service. From the moment I arrived, Coco made me feel... genuinely cared for and completely at ease. She took the time to walk me through my treatment plan options with so much clarity and compassion, which I truly appreciated.I came into the office feeling frustrated and discouraged with my Invisalign progress—it felt like my teeth wasn’t shifting. But after meeting with Coco and Dr. Zammitti, that worry melted away. They listened to my concerns and reassured me with a thoughtful plan to move things in the right direction. Now, with the decision to add more trays, I feel hopeful and confident again.I can’t recommend Zammitti and Gidaly Orthodontics enough. Their care goes beyond just treatment—they truly see and support you.read more

Karen & Dr. Gidaly were friendly, and accommodating for our consultation. Karen is very personable, which makes you immediately feel at home. Dr. Gidaly sat down with us, explained my son’s... X-rays and treatment plan in simple, understandable terms. I felt like a real person, not just a number (which is the opposite of how I felt at our previous orthodontist office with my older two kids). Will definitely recommend him to all our family and friends moving forward!!read more

Update! Treatment complete!!!Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant!Zammitti and his staff are THE orthodontic practice of the Charlotte area. I would say in the state or even the U.S. Dr. Z's... expertise and knowledge is what you would want from a dental professional. The way he and his staff treat their patients should be the goal of all dental practices, regardless of if it is orthodontic or general dentistry practices. While his level of education & experience could be intimidating, the way he speaks with his patience to explain options as well as the way he interacts with his staff is anything but. He truly makes you feel as though you have a voice in your treatment, rather than using arrogant scare tactics, which I have commonly experienced in the dental profession. If you have the slightest concern or insecurity about your smile, there is absolutely no other practice to consider. I am 110% satisfied with the results!!! From my initial consultation all the way to the end of my treatment, this practice has been phenomenal. It is common & almost expected to go to an appointment & wait well beyond your scheduled appointment time before you're seen. I've never had to wait to be seen. I've had huge anxiety about visiting dentists in the past due to previous experiences. There is something about Dr. Zammitti & his staff that provides comfort & calmness. They make you feel as though they literally know you as a person yet they focus on what they are doing at the same time so you are done & out the door asap. Rather than having time to sit and wait & get anxious. It's a seamless operation he has going on in his office. This is THE orthodontic practice! Definitely a 5 star office!WOW! Just WOW! Absolutely detest dental work due to previous experiences at a dentist's offices being so traumatic & the judgement I feel at the practices I've been a patient at. Not to mention, the use of what I feel are scare tactics or at least come across that way. Therefore, I was definitely nervous about my initial ortho consultation with Dr. Zammitti...dreading the possibility of hearing all the things that are wrong & ugly about my teeth along with the pressure of having to have everything "fixed". My experience couldn't have been any further from that. I couldn't have asked for a better experience from the moment I walked in & met my treatment coordinator to the moment I left & everything in between. My treatment coordinator respected my "dental anxiety" & couldn't have done her job any better. Dr. Zammitti is hilarious to me, I'm not sure why but I find him very funny....and BRILLIANT! Like super BRILLIANT! He actually sat down at a desk with me to talk!!!! He explained things in normal human language that made sense. He didn't try to boast how intelligent he is or the endless list of credentials by throwing out tons of medical terminology that could be intimidating & cause someone to become overwhelmed. I didn't feel judged or criticized. I felt like his approach was more of "this is what I can do to make your smile perfect" rather than "you need to do this or all these bad things are going to happen". Everything was clear & I felt like I had a choice. My treatment coordinator explained the financials, which also made me feel like I had options. Because of my initial experience,I chose to follow Dr. Zammitti's suggestions toget braces. Dr. Zammitti & the assistant, Nathalie, were both very gentle putting braces on...BUT they also worked quickly which was crucial for me....yet I felt like if I had needed a break at any point, they would have been completely fine with it.l & wouldn't have grown impatient. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this practice!!!! If you want your smile to be as flawlessas possible ....GO HERE!!!read more
