Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Wisdom teeth are also known as the third molars or the last set of molars to erupt. Wisdom teeth can be partially erupted, fully erupted, or malpositioned and unable to erupt properly. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, and decay, among other concerns. Therefore, it is ideal to remove wisdom teeth in the late teens to early adult years when the eruption phase begins. At this age, the wisdom teeth have not yet fully formed roots, which greatly reduces the risk of damage to the nearby nerves. Additionally, our younger patients tend to experience quicker healing and recovery.
When Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
As mentioned, the best time to have your wisdom teeth removed is in the teen to early adult years. We recommend having a consultation for your wisdom teeth in the mid-teen years, although if you are experiencing any issues or discomfort, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office sooner. Early detection of issues with wisdom teeth results in better health outcomes for our patients. A radiographic exam is used to evaluate the positioning of the teeth to determine if surgery is necessary, and if surgery is not needed right away, our team will work with you on setting a plan to monitor the development of the teeth.
